Jingle Writing – Part Copywriting, Part Lyrics

We all have.

Jingles are a great way to get into the minds of prospects and take up permanent residence there. Some of us can recall jingles we heard as kids for products that have not advertised for years.

For example, in the 1950s, Good & Plenty licorice candy, the oldest branded candy in the United States, introduced a cartoon character into their television commercials, railroad engineer Choo-Choo Charlie. Many a baby boomer (who cannot remember what they ate for dinner yesterday) can recite that commercial word-for-word today:

ONCE UPON A TIME THERE WAS AN ENGINEER

CHOO-CHOO CHARLIE WAS HIS NAME, WE HEAR

HAD AN ENGINE AND HE SURE HAD FUN.

HE USED GOOD & PLENTY CANDY TO MAKE HIS TRAIN RUN.

CHARLIE SAYS, LOVE MY GOOD & PLENTY

CHARLIE SAYS, REALLY RINGS THE BELL

CHARLIE SAYS, LOVE MY GOOD & PLENTY

IT’S THE ONLY LICORICE CANDY THAT I LOVE SO WELL!

To make the commercial even more memorable, Charlie would shake the box of Good & Plenty to create sound effects mimicking a roaring train.

A while back, I wrote what I call a rap jingle used in supermarkets to promote Handi-Snacks Cookie Jammers. Picture a jazzy talk-jingle set to a beat:

JAM ‘EM! SPREAD ‘EM!

CRUNCH ‘EM! MUNCH ‘EM!

JUST DAB ON THE FRUIT WITH A COLORFUL STICK –

IT’S THE CRISPY COOKIE SNACK, REAL STRAWBERRY SPREAD,

A WHOLESOME, ANYTIME TREAT.

HANDI-SNACKS NEW COOKIE JAMMERS FROM KRAFT.

JAM ‘EM! SPREAD ‘EM! CRUNCH ‘EM! MUNCH ‘EM!

YUMMY IN YOUR LUNCHBOX OR ON THE GO.

SO BERRY STRAWBERRY GOOD. YEAH!
